Michelle Obama shock: Ex-FLOTUS reveals how Barack forced her to make major life decision

The First Lady once had a job at Chicago mayor’s office before her husband, former US President Barack Obama got his role in the White House. When Michelle was interviewed for the job, her and Barack were engaged to be married.

Michelle’s interviewer was former government official Valerie Jarrett.

She offered the job to the soon-to-be FLOTUS right away, even though it was not in her authority to do so.

Ms Jarrett revealed that a few days after the interview, she decided to call Michelle and find out whether she wanted the job.

She said: “A few days later, I called Michelle to check in and see if she was ready to accept my offer, which by then I had cleared with my bosses.

“She got right to the point; she had talked it over with her fiancé, and he had some serious reservations.”

Ms Jarrett seemed shocked by Michelle’s response and said she was not “expecting that wild card” as all the other applicants were desperate for a role in the mayor’s office.

Ms Jarrett said to Michelle over the phone: “Who the hell is your fiancé?”

“And why do we care what he thinks?”

She said: “Barack Obama. I’d heard of him.

“I didn’t know him personally, but there weren’t many black lawyers in the country who hadn’t heard of the first black president of the Harvard Law Review in its then 104-year-history.

“He also had received some local attention as a successful community organiser on Chicago’s South Side before he went to law school.

“Plus his name is not one you forget.”

Ms Jarrett said that during the interview with Michelle, she was “both startled and impressed by the ease with which Michelle turned the tables”.

Michelle, who was 26 at the time, was able to conduct herself very maturely and asked why the job would suit her.

Ms Jarrett said: “I was so used to people selling themselves to me that I was both startled and impressed by the ease with which Michelle turned the tables.

“What an unusual young person, I thought.

“To be able to realise that it was as important for her to want to work with me as it was for me to want her showed a maturity I certainly didn’t possess at her age.”

Michelle also had a career as an attorney at a Chicago Law firm called Sidley & Austin, where she also met her husband Barack.
