Before welcoming singer Emeili Sandé to the stage, the mathematician took the opportunity to reflect on the anniversary and her own time as host.
Carol said: “Before we meet all of this year’s winners for one last time, I want to say from the bottom of my heart, what a complete privilege it’s been for me over 20 years to meet every single one of our Pride of Britain heroes.
“You have all changed so many lives with all you’ve done, including mine,” she continued as she started to become emotional.
Fighting back the tears, the presenter managed to add: “I just want to say thank you,” with the venue erupting into applause.
