Saffron Barker: Strictly 2019 contestant and AJ Pritchard send sign messages to fans

Saffron Barker, 19, has revealed that she has been incorporating special messages when she and pro dance partner, AJ Pritchard, 25, walk down the Strictly steps at the beginning of the show.

The Youtuber recently revealed that they have been using sign language to communicate with deaf viewers after one of her fans requested it.

Speaking to the MailOnline, Saffron said: “When I saw a message asking us to do it I knew we had to make it happen.

“We started doing it a couple of weeks ago and we will continue to do it every week.”

She said she felt “happy” that her partner thought it was a good idea too.

“It was such a lovely feeling getting messages from those who saw our signing. I always want my fans to feel noticed, loved and included so this is just part of that, and I’m so happy AJ was up for it too,” she revealed.

Fans may have noticed that the pair had adopted signalling during their introduction.

On Saturday, the duo said “hello” to their fans and during Halloween week they wished everyone a “happy Halloween”.

Fans began to notice and took to Twitter to share their delight at the touching messages.

“Thank you for the beautifully signed HELLO,” one fan gushed.

“I love how Saffron + AJ have used bits of sign language the last couple of weeks,” another noticed.

A third commented: “Fab dance that was a great hello! (Yep noticed the #BSL sign when you came down the stairs at the beginning).”

But despite their heartwarming messages, the pair came under fire last week as they were spotted performing on the BBC show while not wearing Remembrance poppies that commemorate military personnel who died in war.

The couple explained it was due to the nature of their dance but they were branded “disrespectful”.

One viewer wrote: “Someone’s going to have to help me… have the BBC allowed saffron and AJ to get away with NOT WEARING POPPIES??!!

Another said: “@bbcstrictly I am appalled that everyone appearing on tonight’s show is wearing a poppy apart from AJ and Saffron. This is very disrespectful to our nation and the people who risked their lives for our country.”

Inundated with angry viewers who believed the couple should have worn the prestigious symbol, Saffron was forced to respond.

“We weren’t allowed to when we were dancing causeve [sic] our lift,” she said, attempting to shutdown any negative backlash.

In spite of the poppy outrage, Saffron and AJ managed steal 27 points for their Salsa routine on Saturday night, which might not have been as impressive as they hoped.

They narrowly managed to escape being in the bottom two after they were the last couple to be called out, leaving Emma Weymouth and partner Aljaz Skorjanec in the dance-off against Mike Bushell and Katya Jones.

It’s safe to say that the sign language went down a treat with fans, and now they’re through to the next round, everyone’s eagerly awaiting what sweet message they’ll sign on Saturday.

Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday on BBC One.
