What is the plot of The Good Liar?

According to New Line Cinema, the official synopsis reads: “Career con artist Roy Courtnay (Ian McKellen) can hardly believe his luck when he meets well-to-do widow Betty McLeish (Helen Mirren) online.

“As Betty opens her home and life to him, Roy is surprised to find himself caring about her, turning what should be a cut-and-dry swindle into the most treacherous tightrope walk of his life.”

Clearly the movie will be filled with twists and turns, which the trailer has already teased.

Who is in the cast of The Good Liar?

The two stars are Helen Mirren as Betty McLeish, the rich widow targets by conman Ray Courtnay, played by Ian McKellen.

Russell Tovey plays Betty’s grandson, Steven, and Jim Carter plays Vincent, a crime partner and confidante of Ray’s.

Mark Lewis Jones plays Bryn, Celine Buckens is Annalise and Laurie Davidson is Hans Taub, whose characters will likely become more obvious as the film unfolds, as little is known about them at this point.

Is there a trailer for The Good Liar?

There is a trailer, available to watch on Express.co.uk .

In the trailer, Roy bounds up to a pub where a shy, timid-looking Betty is waiting for her online date.

It is revealed she signed up to the dating site as Estelle, after which Roy reveals he too has been keeping secrets, and is not who she believes him to be.

Soon, we see his lies starting to unravel, as he tells his friend Vincent that he intends to steal all of Betty’s millions from her.

However, the trailer also shows the pair laughing and clearly growing fond for one another, while Roy is being threatened by heavies and grilled by Betty’s grandson, Steven.

Things become treacherous for the conman when he is seen shoving a man onto a train track, and screaming alone in his empty apartment, while Betty lay on the floor dishevelled, as if she has become a pawn in his terrible game.

While the ins and outs of the plot is still a mystery, the trailer gives a good indication of the tone of the film, which looks to be one filled with thrills and danger as the veteran stars face off in a heart-wrenching battle of wits.
