Horror movies: Where are the scariest films set? Map revealed

Though October 31 has passed, the time of the horror movie is still raging on. With Stephen King’s Doctor Sleep in cinemas now, among other horrors, fans can’t get enough of the grisly ghouls. But where in the world is the most dangerous place to be, according to film and TV?

Despite the end of Halloween, horror still lurks behind every corner in TV and film.

In data shared exclusively with Express.co.uk by Bolster Cruise Club, the cruise agent, we can reveal where is the most dangerous place to reside if you happen to find yourself in a horror movie.

Needless to say, the top of the pile is the USA, with scary goings-on almost commonplace.

The mutant monsters from The Hills Have Eyes are living in New Mexico, while the Bates Motel from Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is lurking in Arizona.

Fans will remember countless horror movies set in the USA, such as Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, set in Ohio, as well as horror TV shows such as Dexter, who travels the country looking for his victims.

Most recently, fans have been thinking back over The Shining, thanks to the release of Doctor Sleep, which brings us to The Overlook Hotel in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

Next up, while this is a continent rather than a country, Europe comes next in the list of the most terrifyingly dangerous locations in film.

Naturally, if you happen to wander up to Romania, you may come across Nosferatu, AKA Dracula himself in his lair, while the vampires from Let The Right One In are waiting for you in Sweden.

And werewolves are fairly well known in Europe, with an American Werewolf in London making quite clear where he will be waiting.

Dario Argento’s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage sees some horrific attacks take place in Rome, while his later film, Suspiria, sees a bright-eyed American ballet dancer head to Germany to seal her doom.

Next up, of course, is fictional locations, where some pretty nasty things can take place.

In the TV world, The Upside Down was a terrifying place for young Will Byers in Stranger Things, and Gotham City is the home of the maniacal Joker.

Next up is, though not so much a location, The Ocean.

The water can attract some monstrous things, the world of film reveals, such as in suspense thrillers Jaws and Piranha.

As well as that, sometimes water can play a part in housing some nasty ghouls, such as in What Lies Beneath and the creepy demon in the bath in The Shining.

Space is the next scariest location in film, with some pretty shocking terror waiting for those in movies such as Alien.

Despite not being a horror film, Star Wars gave film one of the most evil villains of all time: Darth Vader.

Next in the list is Japan, which is known for making some of the scariest horror films on the planet.

Some of these include The Ring and The Grudge, both of which were remade in America.

But everyone knows, the scariest versions are from the Asian country.

South Africa is the next place to provide some terror, with District 9 bringing about some nasty zombies to petrify you, before you head to Australia where you may have to steer clear of Wolf Creek.

Finally, The Thing is living out in Antarctica, and Frankenstein’s monster even took a little trip to the Arctic Circle in Kenneth Branagh’s retelling of the frightening horror story – so it may be best to avoid the Tundra.

All in all, there seems to be terror round every corner in horror films – so all we can do is thank our lucky stars that we aren’t in one.
