Bill Turnbull: BBC star on ‘big moment’ after incurable prostate cancer diagnosis

Bill Turnbull, 63, revealed in March 2018 he had been diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer the previous November. The former BBC Breakfast presenter, who fronted the show for 15 years, has admitted his treatment regime has been “brutal”, as he has undergone hormone therapy and nine rounds of chemotherapy. But the Classic FM radio host has since spoken out about his hair finally growing back after the chemotherapy which he credited as a big “psychological moment”. Speaking to Radio Times, Bill discussed his hair growth, saying: “Yes, it’s good, isn’t it? When I was on chemo, it was like having a self-regulating haircut, so getting my hair cut again was a big psychological moment.”

The TV personality has remained positive and is encouraged by the people who are also living with prostate cancer.

“What I find encouraging is that I keep meeting people who have defied the odds,” he explained.

“At the Marsden the other day, I met a chap in the same boat as me, except that he’s 40. He was initially given a month to live, and that was four years ago.”

Last week, Bill appeared via video link on BBC Breakfast where he gave an update to presenters Dan Walker and Naga Muchetty on his current condition.

The father-of-three revealed he has made many changes to his lifestyle to help towards his recovery.

Bill said he has almost gone off meat entirely and given up alcohol, in a complete overhaul.

“I used to be very fond of meat, I’ve given it up largely, and I’ve given up alcohol as well, which will come as a surprise to you,” he said.

When asked whether there’s anything he would change about his life, the former television star admitted he would have visited the doctor more frequently.

“I would have gone to the doctors a lot more,” Bill divulged.

“I went when I was 40, I was fine; I went when I was 50, I was fine – I thought I was going to be alright.”

He added: “I’m going to live for as long as I’m going to live for. Whatever happens, happens. If I can help make myself better than great.”
