Great British Bake Off: Will fans tune in next series after drop in interest? Poll results

Great British Bake Off’s 10th series came to an end on Tuesday, October 29 with baker David Atherton crowned the winner. Express.co.uk conducted a poll asking fans if they felt he should have won and if they will watch the 2020 series after a drop in social media interest. Here are the results from the poll.

Are fans still interested in the Great British Bake Off?

Yes, despite concerns over the popularity of the latest season, GBBO fans are still interested in the Channel 4 baking programme.

In the poll, more than 70 per cent of 192 voters said they would be tuning in to watch the show next year.

This follows backlash from viewers who saw many of their favourite bakers being sent home early and harsher verdicts from judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith.

After the Maids of Honour challenge, Paul stormed out of the tent claiming: “They’re awful, they’re really bad”.

Just two weeks later, Prue described the lavender colour of Priya’s icing as “horrible”, leaving her feeling deflated.

Statistically speaking, the show has gone down in popularity as well.

According to social media platform Vanquis, season 10 has been one of the least talked about seasons online.

Per episode, data collected showed an average of just 50,264 tweets were written and posted by viewers.

To put this in perspective, during series seven fans, were sharing an average of 213,784 tweets per episode, which is more than four times as many.

A spokesperson from Vanquis exclusively told Express.co.uk the series has been “one of the worst received on Twitter”.

He said: “Not only have we seen a sharp decline in the number of people tuning in to watch the Great British Bake Off, it seems fans just aren’t engaging with the show like they used to.

“As well as being one of the least talked about seasons of the show, it’s also been one of the worst received on Twitter, with over a quarter of all tweets about it being negative.

“We saw a growing trend this year, with fans being increasingly unhappy with the judges’ decisions.

“Throughout this season, there was a clear difference in opinion between Paul and Prue and the general public, with a number of fans favourites sent home seemingly before their time!

“It’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for the show.”

Nevertheless, readers have voted positively in the poll.

When asked: “Do you agree David should have won GBBO?” more than 52 per cent of 186 people were in favour of the decision made by Hollywood and Leith.

But when asked: “Who do you think should have won GBBO?” it was a close call between Atherton and fellow finalist Steph Blackwell who had won star baker four times.

A total of 43 percent of 188 voters agreed Atherton was the worthy winner with less than 0.5per cent between him and Blackwell.

Only 13 percent of voters wanted finalist Alice Fevronnia to win the show.

Great British Bake Off season 10 is available to watch on 4 Catch Up.
