Dark matter experiment: 5,000-pound detector descends underground to find mystery particle

Dark matter detects like LUX-ZEPLIN hope to confirm one theory proposing dark matter is an undiscovered sub-atomic particle.

On October 21, the particle detector found its new home in a former gold-mining shaft 4,850ft underground.

Jeff Cherwinka of the University of Wisconsin said: “This was the most challenging move of a detector system that I have ever done in decades of working on experiments.”

According to mechanical engineer Jake Davis, lowering the director into SURF’s tunnels was a delicate operation.
