Philippines earthquake: Deadly tremors strike again as Davao City rocked by 6.5 quake

The huge quake rocked the southern Philippine island of Mindanao on Thursday. The United States Geological Survey has said the quake was magnitude-6.5 and hit around 25 miles southwest of Davao City in Kisante. The area has a population of around 1.6 million people.

So far, there have been no reports of casualties or widespread damage in the area.

On Tuesday, another earthquake caused a large amount of destruction in the same region.

Tuesday’s quake, which was a whopping magnitude 6.6, killed eight people and wiped out schools and other buildings.

Two other people have been recorded as missing along with 395 more injured.

Around 2,700 houses and buildings including hospitals have been destroyed, according to the Office of Civil Defence.

On October 16, a magnitude 6.3 earthquake killed another seven people and destroyed more than 7,000 buildings.

The region of the Philippines is known for its frequent seismic activity.

The islands are situated on the infamous “Ring of Fire” where most of the world’s earthquakes take place.

The tremor struck 178 miles south-southeast of Kushiro, in the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The earthquake saw an alert level raised for a volcano on an island in Kagoshima Prefecture, according to Japan’s Meteorological Agency.

The volcano warning level for Mount Shindake on Kuchinoerabu Island was upgraded from 2 to 3 on a scale of 5.
