Why are Chelsea vs Man Utd and Liverpool vs Arsenal in Carabao Cup both on Wednesday?

Wednesday night sees a bumper evening of Carabao Cup action with four Premier League giants in action.

Manchester United travel to Chelsea while Liverpool welcome Arsenal to Anfield tomorrow evening.

Both matches will be live on Sky Sports with no coverage of Tuesday night’s games.

The matches were shifted to Wednesday due to last week’s Europa League action that Manchester United and Arsenal were involved in.

United beat Partizan Belgrade 1-0 while Arsenal needed a late Nicolas Pepe free kick to see off Vitoria.

With the two clubs featuring in the Europa League, their Premier League matches for last weekend were shifted to Sunday.

That means the clubs are given an extra day of rest and will play on Wednesday instead of tonight.

Manchester United have headed to London without David de Gea or Paul Pogba. Brandon Williams and James Garner are among those in the 18-man squad to have travelled though.

“Fred will probably take Paul’s position for a while now and he’s been brilliant for us, but Andreas [Pereira] has grown the last few games,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.

“His energy and running, chasing – he’s a different sort of No 10, he can play also in the central positions.

“So I’m delighted for Andreas – great professional, great attitude. He does his job to the best of his abilities.”

Liverpool will welcome Arsenal with young goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher set to start.

Jurgen Klopp’s assistant Pepijn Lijnders said: “For us, Ali is our No 1 – more than a No 1 I would say!

“We have Adrian, who did an unbelievable job and if something happens with Ali, Adrian is our No 2 and then has to do the job.

“But in this League Cup, it is Caoimhin’s competition. As I said before the MK Dons game, with youth development, with these moments when they are in between the U23s and the first team, consistency is very important.

“He had a good game and he is preparing for another one. It will be special for him playing at Anfield.”
