Rafael Nadal coach Carlos Moya lifts lid on injury woes and provides Paris Masters update

Rafael Nadal is ready to put his recent injury issues behind him, according to the Spaniard’s coach Carlos Moya.

World No 2 Nadal withdrew from the final day of Laver Cup action because of a swollen hand but is set to return at the Paris Masters tomorrow.

The 19-time Grand Slam winner takes on Adrian Mannarino as he launches his assault on the year-end world No 1.

Paris has always been a successful city for Nadal as 12 of his Grand Slam titles have come at Roland Garros.

But he has never won the Masters event in the French capital.

“Two seasons ago, Rafa had to retire in the quarter-finals [due to a knee injury] and he only participated because the year-end No 1 spot was at stake.,” Moya told the ATP.

“Last year when he played here, he had to have [ankle] surgery the following week.

“His physical conditioning going into this event hasn’t been in our favour.

“This year is different. He’s coming into the event well-conditioned.

“We’ll see how things play out and if his health holds up this week and in London [for the ATP finals].”

Over the years Nadal has felt the wear and tear of his physically-demanding style of tennis.

Injuries have mounted up and many do not expect the 33-year-old to have the same longevity as 38-year-old rival Roger Federer.

However, Moya claims Nadal does not have any problems heading into the final stretch of the 2019 campaign.

He said: “You have to factor in his quality of play and what his opponent brings to the match as well. Nothing is guaranteed.

“It does not assure you anything, but Rafa is arriving in Paris both physically and mentally prepared.

“I know Rafa as a player, I’m conscious of the state he’s in when he enters an event, I have a sense of what he’s capable of doing and I’m always optimistic about his chances.”
