Lucy Fallon: 'People are not happy' Coronation Street’s Bethany Platt on Sinead storyline

Speaking on the red carpet of The Pride of Britain Awards, Lucy Fallon, 23, said viewers “have not been happy” with Coronation Street’s Bethany Platt since the controversial scene aired.

The soap actress, who wowed on the red carpet in a plunging red dress, explained that the upset has caused some negative backlash and trolling online.

She told the Daily Mail yesterday: “People have gone back to disliking Bethany now. I’ve had some trolling.

“People get so invested in the characters – we’re in their living rooms three nights a week for two episodes each night so I think people get quite passionate about it.

“There have been a few people that have been really angry with me, it’s because it’s been so emotional, and Katie [McGlynn] and Rob [Mallard] were brilliant.”

Daniel kissed Bethany days before his wife Sinead’s untimely death, and the deceit unfortunately got back to the dying and heartbroken character.

Lucy added that she thinks some viewers thought the kissing scene was a bit misplaced, as Sinead’s cancer battle and death scenes were harrowing enough.

She continued: “I think people thought the kiss should have been somewhere else in the story.”

But she went on to defend the storyline, and added that these things can happen, especially in soapland.

She added: “I feel like it needed to happen, it’s a soap, it’s gonna be dramatic and because of what Sinead is going through, she’s dying of cancer, and what Daniel is going through, he’s losing his wife and that moment he just needed comfort.

“I feel like it does happen.”

Lucy first appeared on the Corrie cobbles back in 2015 as Sarah Platt’s daughter, who she had at just 13 years old.

The star of several major storylines, including being a part of a sex ring, she has won prestigious awards for her portrayal of Bethany.

Last year Lucy picked up The British Soap Award for Best Actress, National Television Award for Outstanding Serial Drama Performance and The British Soap Award for Best Female Dramatic Performance.

Despite her huge success on the ITV soap, Lucy announced in May that she would be leaving Coronation Street.

Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine she said her last scenes will air in March and that she felt it was “the right time” to leave.

She told Lorraine Kelly: “Oh it’s going to be horrible. When I leave I’ll have been there for five years and it just feels like the right time.

“I’m going to miss everybody so much. I can’t even properly think about it, but I’m excited, I’m nervous, we’ll just see what happens.”

And while there has been much speculation on whether Lucy will compete in an upcoming series of Strictly Come Dancing, Lucy said she wants to focus on acting.

She said: “I don’t know.

“I think I’d like to focus on doing more acting, dramas and things, and maybe in the future I could do something like that.”

Coronation Street continues tomorrow at 7.30pm on ITV.
