UK spiders: Six ways to stop spiders coming inside YOUR home

Spiders are on the rise in the UK this autumn and many are now invading British homes. Sightings of the eight-legged air-breathing arthropods increase every autumn because this is when males start to move around to try and find a mate. So with “spider-season” officially arrived, here are six ways of stopping them coming inside your home.

Experts from GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk are encouraging Brits to pick conkers and get cleaning if they want to keep the creepy crawlies away.

A spokesperson for the company said: “Spiders are something which really splits the nation, with some enjoying sharing space with them, while others shriek at the sight of one.

“It is important to remember that spiders are vital for our ecosystem, keeping on top of things such as flies.

“If you do find any in your home, it’s best to scoop them up and set them free outside where they hopefully won’t return.

“Hoovering them up, as tempting as it may be, doesn’t get rid of them, instead they can lay eggs and crawl back down the nozzle – exactly what you didn’t want to happen!”

These are GardenBuildingsDirect.co.uk’s top tips for deterring spiders:

Conkers

Putting a conker in each corner of a room, or on windowsills, to deter spiders has never been scientifically researched.

Spiders don’t eat conkers or lay eggs in them, so there is no reason why horse chestnut trees would bother to produce spider-repelling chemicals.

However, if you’re running out of options, give it a go as it’s a great natural way to keep the critters out of your home.

Peppermint

Spiders supposedly hate the smell of peppermint, meaning spraying rooms with peppermint oil and sprays could stop them intruding.

Mixing 10-15 drops of essential peppermint oil into a spray bottle full of water creates the perfect anti-spider deterrent.

Citrus

Spiders hate the smell of citrus fruits such as lemons, limes and oranges.

You can either use spray, cream or even citronella candles to put off spiders.
