Surfer springs from surfboard and lands on shark at 'shark bite capital of the world'

A surfer in Florida sprung from his surfboard and landed on a shark according to Volusia County Beach Patrol officials. Amazingly, the unnamed 27-year-old man received minor cuts and was treated at the scene after the bizarre incident this weekend. Officials were called to the inlet at New Smyrna Beach at around 1pm on Sunday afternoon.

Local reports claimed the man, from Orlando, was surfing when the shocking incident place.

He is believed to have jumped off his board and onto a shark in the sea, receiving only minor injuries in the process.

The man is thought to have driven himself home to Orlando after the shocking incident, Fox News reported.

Volusia County is known for its spate of shark attacks, with surfers often being victims.

New Smyrna Beach’s has a reputation for being one of the country’s most popular surf resorts on the east coast of the US.

And back in July this year NBC’s Today Show branded the location the “shark-bite capital of the world”.

Earlier this year, local reports claimed at least three people were bitten by sharks in just two days.

The incidents, which are thought to have taken place in August, saw two surfers bitten just moments apart.

And, the magazine claimed that back in 2010, over 50 percent of all shark attack victims were surfers.

According to the University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File (ISAF), Volusia has in the past become one of the world’s highest shark attack locations.

The organisation had advice on its website for surfers, and swimmers if they come into contact with a shark.

“If a shark attacks, the best strategy is to hit it on the tip of its nose,” they warn.

The ISAF added saying: “This usually results in the shark retreating.”

New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County is believed to be a big shark attack location as its attractive waters are popular with tourists and surfers.
