Michelle Obama urged to make last minute Presidential run by leading Democrat donor

Half a dozen leading Democrat donors met last week in Manhattan’s Whitby Hotel. They discussed which of the Democrats seeking their party’s nomination for the Presidency they preferred.

However according to The New York Times they also asked whether other Democrats could enter the race, such as Hillary Clinton or former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Former vice president Joe Biden and Senator Elizabeth Warren are the current frontrunners for the Democrat nomination.

Pete Buttigieg, mayor of South Bend, and veteran leftists Bernie Sanders are also in contention.

The winner will face the Republican nominee, expected to be current President Donald Trump, in the 2020 Presidential election.

According to The New York Times Ms Clinton, who Trump defeated in 2016, has privately told people she could win the Democratic nomination if she stood.

Mr Bloomberg is claimed to have said the same thing, though both reportedly doubt an opening for them to enter exists.

Ms Obama was first lady of the United States between January 2009 and January 2017.

She married Barack Obama, the 44th president, in 1992.

Ms Obama went on a highly profitable tour to promote the book, with events across North America and Europe including in London’s O2 arena.

There are reports of anxiety within the Democratic Party about the performances of some of the front runners.

Speaking to New York Times Connie Schultz, a journalist with close links to the Democratic Party, commented: “There’s more anxiety than ever.

“I’ve been surprised by some who’ve called me.”

Earlier this month Ms Obama used her twitter account to pay tribute to her husband.

She wrote: “27 years ago, this guy promised me a life full of adventure. I’d say he’s delivered.

“Here’s to our next chapter of becoming empty nesters and discovering what’s next.”

Mr Obama’s memoir, recounting his time as President, is expected to be published next year.
