Arsenal hero wants Man Utd to sign Mesut Ozil – ‘I would drive him there’

Former Arsenal cult hero Perry Groves claims he would drive Mesut Ozil to Manchester United if the Red Devils wanted to sign him.

Ozil has featured just twice for Arsenal this season and has not made Unai Emery’s match day squads for the last five games.

And Groves clearly believes the German’s time at the club is coming to an end after almost six-and-a-half years in north London.

When asked if United wanted to sign Ozil, Groves told talkSPORT: “I would drive him there.”

However, Groves believes the departures of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez at United in the summer show manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would not want a player like Mesut Ozil in his squad.

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got rid of Alexis Sanchez because he was on bundles of money and under-performing and he didn’t want to handle the big-name star,” Groves added.

“He got rid of [Romelu] Lukaku, who was average for Man United but still scoring goals, because he didn’t want a big-name star.

“Do you think in a million years he would think about taking Mesut Ozil? Do you think that Solskjaer could get performances out of him?”

Groves is a fan of Ozil as a player but admits it is the work rate that is letting him down.

“He’s got to run around first,” Groves said.

“He’s got to want to link the team together.

“This weekend a year ago, Mesut played against Leicester at home and Arsenal won 3-1 and he was on a different planet to everyone else on the pitch – he took your breath away.

“I think he scored, he made one for [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang but the thing with Ozil is he only does that every one or two in ten games at that level

“He should be, a player of his quality, doing it four or five times [every ten].

“It has to come from Mesut Ozil; that desire and drive has to come from him.”
