Soleil Moon Frye Dishes On Punky Brewster Reboot, Says It’s A ‘Dream Come True’

It’s been more than 30 years since the world had a regular dose of “Punky Power,” but that’s all about to change with the Punky Brewster reboot which is coming to NBC Universal’s new streaming service, Peacock. Soleil Moon Frye – who starred as the titular character for four seasons between 1984 and 1988 – recently opened up about bringing the character back to life, and how the experience is a “dream come true.”

Frye told Too Fab that she is “so happy” that the show is coming back, and she also gave some insight on the new storyline for the grown-up version of Punky. The series will focus on the former foster child who is now in her 40s and trying to tackle life as a single mom of three kids. The 43-year-old actress added that the character will also become friends with “a young girl who reminds her a lot of her younger self.”

“It is my dream come true, this really is my dream come true, I love Punky Brewster so much,” said Frye. “I always say that I didn’t really know where Punky ended and I began because we were the same in so many ways and I believed it so much then and I believe it so much now.”

Frye added that she feels like both she and Punky are coming of age again and finding their “inner Punky Power.” She says that is something she can connect to both as a woman and a mother. Frye explained that she is a woman who feels stronger and sexier at this stage of her life, with the experience that she has, and she believes the show can redefine what the concept of getting older is.

The mother of four says that Punky has a superhero in her, and playing her again has made her feel really good and really alive, and that is something she is very proud of. She also admitted that it was very natural for her to return to the role and wear her Punky clothes again, and that “inner-Punky” believes in herself and her strength, and she is “so confident in who she is.”

Frye’s goal with the Punky Brewster reboot is to help make the world a better place, and she believes that everyone right now could “use some Punky Power.” Frye says she doesn’t take it lightly, and she knows that she can spread a lot of love with this show.

Fans of the show will be excited to find out that Punky’s bestie Cherie (Cherie Johnson) will also be part of the reboot. Cherie is now a social worker who works with orphans, and her career was inspired by her friendship with Punky.

Freddie Prinze Jr. will play Punky’s ex-husband, and Soleil Moon Frye says that even though the two are divorced, there is still “lingering chemistry” between them.
