Google Home warning: New update may have broken your smart speaker and there isn’t a fix

You might not know it, but Google Home devices are regularly updated over the air (OTA). New firmware is usually a reason for users to get giddy with excitement, but the latest from Google is anything but.

That’s because some Google Home owners have taken to the firm’s forums and Reddit to complain about a new update that’s rendering their smart speaker useless.

In a nutshell, a number of users are complaining that since downloading the new software, their Google Home devices are unable to heed any voice commands and are stuck showing their four LEDs.

While it seems unplugging and then plugging back in Google Home devices, or a factory reset, is fixing the issue for some, others haven’t been so lucky.

One owner, in particular, claimed their device was unable to reset in its current state. They also said disconnecting then reconnecting was no use, either.

They complained: “Google Home Mini has never worked. Four solid white lights on. Will not reset.

“Have tried holding reset for minute or more. One solid green light and three solid white lights when reset button is held. No sound, volume controls not working. Have disconnected and reconnected power. Nothing at all.”

A Google employee responded to the post on the firm’s support page. They said it’s “aware” of the problem in question and is working on a fix.

They replied: “Hi everyone, we wanted to provide an update here — as others have noted in this thread, the team is aware of these specific issues with both Google Home Minis and Google Home devices becoming unresponsive and we’re actively working on a fix.

“It has been very difficult for our team to diagnose this issue and we understand why many of you have been frustrated with this ongoing process.

“Our support team will be reaching out to customers on this thread via private messaging to further address this issue and come to a resolution.

“We appreciate your patience as we work through this.”

Until a fix is released for affected Google Home speakers, it looks like you’re out of luck.

Of course, Express.co.uk will be on hand to let you know the moment a new Google Home update is released.
