Star Wars 9 trailer: Does C-3PO DIE in The Rise of Skywalker? Trailer sparks fan frenzy

The first trailer for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker has dropped. Fans were ecstatic when the teaser was finally released during Monday Night Football. But since its release fans have been concerned one character may not make it to the end of the movie.

Does C-3PO die in The Rise of Skywalker?

One moment in the new trailer has left fans completely bereft and wondering if beloved droid C-3PO dies in the latest movie.

The trailer opens with Rey (played by Daisy Ridley) running through various landscapes, including a green forest, jumping inside a huge ship and standing on a platform surrounded by water.

As she goes on what looks like a treacherous journey, Finn (John Boyega) says: “It’s an instinct, a feeling.

“The Force brought us together, we’re not alone.

“Good people will fight if we lead them.”

He looks at new ships and while travelling with Po Dameron (Oscar Isaacs), Rey is heard saying: “People keep telling me they know me – but no one does.”

As Rey admits this while standing on a platform in the depths of the sea, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) walks towards her, telling her he understands her.

The pair look like they are about to fight, but as they do, the unmistakable voice of Emperor Palpatine (Iain McDiarmuid) says: “Long have I waited and now your coming together is your undoing.”

Perhaps he is speaking about Rey and Kylo Ren, who may be coming together to fight against The Dark Side – unless the latter is about to pull her towards his leader.

However, the most shocking and potentially devastating moments comes as C-3PO has his memories and hardware fixed.

As he does this, Po asks him: “What are you doing there, 3PO?”

The droid gently replies: “Taking one last look, sir. At my friends.”

This shocking collection of words has made some fans believe C-3PO is going to sacrifice himself for the others.

The idea of C-3PO’s death clearly affected R2-D2, who is moving erratically and scrabbling as C-3PO taps him gently.

Sad, swelling music then overtakes the action, meaning this moment is clearly an important one and could signpost the saga is at its end.

After C-3PO’s admission, the voice of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is heard, he is presumably speaking to Rey: “Confronting fear is the destiny of the Jedi.

“Your destiny. The Force will be with you.”

Finally, the voice of Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) reiterates this point with a simple word: “Always.”

Rey confronts what looks to be the helmet of Darth Vader on a plinth, meaning it may be her role to finally put an end to The Dark Side.

As the saga of the Skywalkers is coming to an end with this story, this may be the moment we wave goodbye to a few characters – but the idea of C-3PO dying is one many fans cannot bear.

Luckily, fans will only have to wait a short while to find out the droid’s fate.
