Best PS4 controller ever? Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller review for PlayStation 4

Express Online recently reviewed Nacon’s excellent Asymmetric Wireless Controller, which gives PS4 owners the chance to play the Xbox One way.

I’ve always found Xbox One controllers better for racing games, sports sims, first-person shooters and third-person action/adventure games.

This is largely down to the position of the two analogue sticks, the superior trigger buttons and the overall shape and weight of the Xbox controller.

If the Asymmetric Wireless Controller is the PS4 equivalent of the regular Xbox pad, then the Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller is more akin to the Xbox Elite series.

Does Nacon’s premium controller achieve elite status on PlayStation 4? Check out the review below to find out.

The Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller is all about customisation, providing users with the tools to tweak the controller to their tastes.

It comes with two pairs of joystick heads with concave or convex tips, three pairs of shafts (more on this in a bit) and three pairs of weights to make it lighter or heavier.

Obviously it all comes down to personal preference, but using the heavier weights just makes the controller feel that little more premium.

The shafts, meanwhile, vary in thickness for increased or decreased analogue sensitivity. Using a thicker base for the left analogue stick gives you steadier control over your character movement, while using a thinner base for the right analogue stick increases the sensitivity for more precise aiming.

Tweaking these different elements is pretty simple, so you can quickly and easily experiment with what suits – although it would have been nice if the analogue bases varied in length as well as width.

Similar to the paddles on the Xbox One Elite Controller, the Revolution Unlimited features four customisable shortcut buttons (labelled S1, S2, S3 and S4) on the back of the device.

They’re particularly useful for performing secondary actions like running, reloading, crouching and lobbing grenades, ensuring that you never have to take your thumbs off the analogue sticks and trigger fingers off the trigger buttons.

Unfortunately, however, the shortcut buttons can get in the way, and you might find yourself accidentally performing an unintended command or two. This is compounded by the fact that you can’t remove them like the Xbox Elite’s paddles.

Speaking of the custom suite, the number of customisation options is mind boggling, and there’s even the option to make minor changes through the controller itself if you don’t have a PC or Mac.

Nacon could arguably have made it easier to find the customisation suite, but a quick search on YouTube or Google should give you the information you need.

Other nifty features include headphone volume controls and a mute button by the headphone jack, battery indicators and the ability to played wired or wirelessly.

The Revolution Unlimited Pro even has a decent D-pad, which isn’t something you can say for a lot of third-party controllers.

On par with the Xbox Elite pad, the Revolution Unlimited Pro Controller is the best DualShock 4 alternative on the market right now.

VERDICT – 4.5/5
