Hurricane tracker: Why hurricane season 2019 has been ‘unusual’ – EXPERT

Initially in May, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecast a near-normal hurricane season for the year.

However, in August, NOAA revised their predictions, reporting they had increased their chances of an above-normal hurricane season for 2019.

A system known as El Nino, which suppresses hurricane formation, ended slightly earlier than predicted, making conditions over the Atlantic more favourable for hurricane development.

Lead seasonal hurricane forecaster at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, Gerry Bell, said in August: “El Nino typically suppresses Atlantic hurricane activity but now that it’s gone, we could see a busier season ahead.
