Diwali 2019: What is Diwali – How is the Festival of Light celebrated?

One of the most defining aspects of Diwali is the food, which includes a range of savoury and sweet dishes.

Diwali is most well known for its sweet foods, especially during the second day of the festival which is dedicated to wealth and will see many people buy sweets for their loved ones.

Most Indian sweets – known as ‘mithai’ – use a nut or vegetable base, condensed with sugar or milk.

The most traditional sweets are Halwa (grated vegetable cooked with ghee, sugar and milk), Laddu (balls of flour, nuts and raisins), Barfi (fudge made with condensed milk) and Gulab jamun (doughnut holes served with sweet syrup).
