Man Utd vs Liverpool LIVE: Line ups and team news latest, Mohamed Salah injury updates

MANCHESTER UNITED vs LIVERPOOL

  • Manchester United are unbeaten in their last six home games against Liverpool
  • The Reds could become just the fourth team to win their opening nine top-flight games
  • Marcus Rashford averages a Premier League goal every 208 minutes against teams from the established top six
  • Liverpool have won just two of their last 13 league matches away to the other sides in the established top six

Was that… was that a dig?

15:15: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a jab to the Liverpool kidneys! Didn’t know he had it in him.

The Norwegian tactician poked fun at Liverpool by mentioning their ongoing title drought.

The Red Devils have failed to win the league in the five full seasons since Sir Alex Ferguson left the club with 13 championship medals under his arm, but Liverpool’s drought has gone on for far longer.

The Reds have tried and failed to finish top in every season since 1990, which is a run of 27 full campaigns of domestic failure.

“I am sure we will bounce back and win the league,” said Solskjaer, when asked about his side’s poor form of late, before unleashing his thinly-veiled dig at Liverpool.

“And I am sure it won’t be 30 years until the next Premier League that we do win.” Meow!

Paul Pogba

15:10: Graeme Souness, Roy Keane and Jose Mourinho are devastated. And that’s because there was no sign of Paul Pogba getting off the team bus as they arrived at Old Trafford.

David de Gea and Anthony Martial were there and look set to be involved this afternoon despite plenty of injury doubts.

Mohamed Salah injury latest

15:05: So I’ve seen the hysteria surrounding the fitness of Mohamed Salah.

The Liverpool winger is still expected to have recovered from a twisted ankle sustained against Leicester.

I blame the panic on the official Premier League fantasy football website, who still have him down as a doubt.

Countdown…

15:00: Fasten your seat-belts folks, only 90 minutes until kick off… Sky Sports are just starting their marathon coverage. Roy Keane, Jose Mourinho and Graeme Souness all eagerly waiting to slate Paul Pogba.

Wazza nightmare

14:55: Not too relevant to this fixture – but did anyone see Wayne Rooney’s final MLS match last night? Talk about a disaster…

DC United scored an incredibly dramatic stoppage-time equaliser in a play-off against Toronto to force extra time.

All sounds good, right? However, Toronto then proceeded to score FOUR goals in 13 minutes and won the match 5-1.

The 33-year-old former Manchester United and England forward will now head to join Championship Derby, who are also in something close to disarray. Can’t see anything going wrong there…

Circumstances…

14:50: Having taken Manchester City to the wire in the fight for the title last season before going on to lift the Champions League, Liverpool are in a great position to push for their maiden Premier League crown.

They have won all eight of their opening fixtures and head to old foes Manchester United looking to equal the best start to a Premier League season (nine wins, matching Chelsea in 2005/06) and the most consecutive wins in the Premier League (18, stretching back over the last campaign and drawing level with Manchester City in 2017/18).

While a trip to Old Trafford, a place they have won only once in all competitions since 2009, would usually be seen as a daunting prospect, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are in something resembling disarray – starting the weekend 12th in the table, knowing defeat would see them fall 18 points behind their rivals and with pressure growing on the manager to turn things around.

Afternoon…

14:45: Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Manchester United vs Liverpool.

I should warn you – today is our mega, massive, humongous, extended preview edition of the blog.

Yes, I’ll be subjecting you to nearly a two-hour build up ahead of the showdown at Old Trafford as Liverpool seek a perfect nine and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side look to navigate themselves away from the relegation zone.

I’ve just realised how bizarre that sentence sounded. Kind of like Paul Hollywood being eliminated from the Bake Off tent in round one.

Anyway, lots to discuss – so let’s get this thing started.

MANCHESTER UNITED vs LIVERPOOL – TEAM NEWS

Paul Pogba is out for United due to an ongoing ankle issue and goalkeeper David De Gea looks set to join him on the sidelines with a groin complaint.

Anthony Martial (thigh) and Aaron Wan-Bissaka (tonsillitis) could play a part, but there are question marks hanging over the likes of Jesse Lingard, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw, Diogo Dalot and Mason Greenwood while Eric Bailly (knee) is out.

Mohamed Salah, Alisson Becker and Joel Matip are all set to start for Liverpool.

Salah is expected to have recovered from a twisted ankle sustained against Leicester while keeper Alisson is back in full training after a calf problem suffered in the first match of the season. Matip is fit again after a knock ruled him out of the last two games.
