Brexit travel: Are you covered if Brexit disrupts your holiday?

Brexit is just around the corner, and with the political landscape in flux, many Britons are concerned about how the departure will affect their impending travel plans. With talk of new passports, visas and health insurance losses, 15.6 million surveyed British residents say their biggest concern about Brexit is how it will affect their holiday. Luckily, one firm has stepped in to cushion the blow should Brexit impact your holiday plans.

In advance of the impending departure from the EU, many British residents have opted to steer clear of European travel to avoid running into danger.

More than a quarter of Brits surveyed said they had postponed or cancelled a trip because of the impact Brexit might have.

The nationwide survey by travel insurance provider Holiday Extras also revealed that cancellation of flights, ferries and trains to the continent is a real concern for travellers.

However, as part of their travel insurance offering Holiday Extras have come to the rescue with a new “Brexit coverage” option.

The extra protection will serve customers who may face cancellations or delays to flights, trains and ferries between UK and EU terminals, as well as the closure of the channel tunnel.

Tourists already on holiday will also be protected if their trip or journey home is disrupted, they missed their departure, or connection, or incur costs as a result of a delayed home arrival.

While many travel insurance firms have steered clear from Brexit coverage, Holiday Extras are including the add-on to existing single and annual multi-trip policies for individuals, couples, families and single-parent families.

The firm also offer four different coverage levels for varying prices

Howard Dove, Managing Director Insurance at Holiday Extras, commented: “Brexit is clearly causing uncertainty amongst travellers. Having run our survey for more than a year and asked 13,000 travellers how Brexit was affecting their travel plans, we discovered in September that almost three-quarters of Brits are unsure if their travel insurance covers them for Brexit disruptions and that the percentage of travellers postponing or cancelling plans had shot up to 27 per cent. We decided to launch our new Brexit Disruption Cover.

“Allowing Brits to protect their holiday from a no-deal Brexit, the cover is available as an add-on in both single-trip and annual multi-trip policies, for solo travellers, couples, families and single-parent families. We are extremely proud to be one of the first companies to add Brexit-only insurance cover to our product offering, ensuring that even in the event of a no-deal Brexit, sun-seekers can still enjoy a hassle-free break.”

Matt Hampton, Travel Commentator, added: “Holidaymakers should be able to get a week in the sun without having to factor in the wrangling going on at Westminster and Brussels, so it’s great to see someone stepping up to solve the problem and make booking a holiday to the EU hassle-free.”

The news follows updated advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office advising Britons about potential passport and visa changes should the UK make a no-deal exit.

Speaking with Express.co.uk, an FCO spokesperson said: “If the UK leaves the European Union without a deal, visiting the EU will change.

“Check your passport, get travel insurance which covers your healthcare, check you have the right driving documents and organise pet travel.”
