Elton John has been making a lot of headlines lately thanks to his new explosive memoir Me. And, while he was promoting the new book, he revealed that he wasn’t impressed with The Lion King remake because they didn’t get music right.
The 72-year-old singer composed numerous popular songs in the original 1994 animated feature, including Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Circle of Life, I Just Can’t Wait To Be King, Hakuna Matata, and Be Prepared. But, his involvement in the remake was limited, which came as a surprise to him.
“I wish I’d been invited to the party more, but the creative vision for the film and its music was different this time around and I wasn’t really welcomed or treated with the same level of respect,” John told British GQ. “That makes me extremely sad.”
The Oscar winner did record Never Too Late for the live-action version of The Lion King, but he says that the music in the film didn’t have the same impact as it did in the original because the “magic and joy were lost.” When it comes down to it – even though the movie covered some of his hits from the original – John says that he believes “they messed the music up.”
The soundtrack from the live-action version features new music, plus covers of John’s songs from Beyoncé, Donald Glover, Billy Eichner, and Seth Rogan. But, it hasn’t found the same success as the animated version.
John pointed out that the original Lion King soundtrack was the best-selling album of 1994, but the new soundtrack didn’t have nearly the same impact on the charts. He explained that it fell off the charts quickly despite the movie’s success at the box office.
The original soundtrack was at the top of the Billboard 200 for ten weeks, and it also won four Grammys, two Golden Globes, and two Oscars – one for Best Original Score and the other for Best Original Song (Can You Feel the Love Tonight).
Sir Elton John noted that he is happy with the stage musical, which has the right spirit and allows the music to live on.
