New Rangers chief Ross Wilson to push Steven Gerrard towards Aaron Hickey January signing

Ross Wilson recently became Rangers’ new sporting director after leaving a similar role at Southampton and the 36-year-old has wasted no time in looking for new talent to improve Steven Gerrard’s side.

According to The Scottish Sun, he will recommend the Gers go after Hearts left-back Aaron Hickey.

The report claims the 17-year-old could be available for just £2million.

Wilson had been monitoring Hickey’s progress at Hearts, while he was still at St Mary’s.

And he has been impressed with the player’s development since Celtic sold the youngster to the Jambos a year go.

Ironically, the Hoops would benefit financially if Rangers secured a deal with Hearts for Hickey, as they insisted on a 30 per-cent sell-on clause when he made the switch to Tynecastle.

However, Hearts are not keen on letting the talented defender leave and despite Hickey being under contract until the summer of 2021, the club are exploring options to extend his current deal.

Wilson started his career at Falkirk and had spells with Watford and Huddersfield before spending four years at Southampton.

Rangers were looking for a new sporting director after Mark Allen resigned from the position for “family reasons” and in order to “explore other options”.

It was a blow for Rangers, especially after the former head of Manchester City’s academy had just helped them conduct an overhaul of the squad during the summer.

However, it did give the Teddy Bears the opportunity to approach Wilson for the job again.

Rangers had hoped Wilson would take the job two years ago but he turned down the opportunity, insisting the time wasn’t right.

But things circumstances have changed for the Scot, who is now excited about taking on the role.

“This job, at this stage in my career, was one I felt I had to take,” Wilson said.

“I am both excited and determined to ensure that in working together with the board, Steven and all of our staff we can continue to build an excellent, modern football infrastructure and a winning Rangers.”
