Man Utd chief Matt Judge once held Edinson Cavani talks – star's brother prevented deal

Manchester United chief Matt Judge held talks with PSG star Edinson Cavani early into his time at the club, reports say.

Judge was previously a investment banker but was given the responsibility of negotiating transfers and contracts by Ed Woodward back in 2016.

It is he who has overseen the bulk of Manchester United’s transfer activity in the time since, albeit with a hit and miss record.

And The Athletic say that, early into his time at United, Judge held talks over a move for PSG hitman Cavani.

The Uruguay international has been one of the best strikers in the world for the best part of a decade.

And United, it seems, did genuinely appear interest in signing the forward a few years ago.

It is claimed the initial meeting regarding Cavani went well but when the PSG star’s brother got involved, the goalposts shifted.

The PSG star’s sibling supposedly made different demands and ultimately prompted the striker into staying at the Parc des Princes.

And Judge, ever since, has decided to ask for prospective details from targets to be outlined in an email.

Cavani could be available on a free transfer next summer, with PSG reportedly willing to let the 32-year-old run down his contract.

And with United needing a striker, it remains to be seen if they will reignite their interest in the former Napoli hitman.

Atletico Madrid are thought to be frontrunners in the race for his signature, with interest from Diego Simeone well-documented.

Cavani was asked about his PSG future back in the summer and vowed to stay at the Parc des Princes until the end of the season at least.

“I promised that I’d stay at PSG until the end of my contract. That is certain,” he said.

“In future, I could decide to go back to Uruguay, but football doesn’t depend only on you, as there is also a club and supporters.

“I am not thinking about a new contract right now, as we haven’t even discussed it.

“I am relaxed, whether or not I remain after the contract expires.

“The only thing I know is that I’ll continue to give my all for Paris Saint-Germain, as after six years, Paris is my home and my family.”

With United needing a new striker it’s understood that they’re closing in on a deal to sign Mario Mandzukic in January.

Mandzukic has already given the Red Devils his word, via his entourage, that he’ll move to Old Trafford this winter.
