MLB Playoffs – How does the system work? When is the World Series?

The New York Yankees are favourites to win this year’s World Series title, which would be their first in ten years.

The historic franchise is currently one game up against the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series.

Elsewhere, the St Louis Cardinals are trailing 2-0 to the Washington Nationals in the National League Championship Series.

The Cardinals had home field advantage for the first two games but failed to make it pay as they lost both games to the Nationals.

After blowing away the Atlanta Braves in the division series, the Cardinals were disappointing in the first two games of the series.

The World Series is set to start on October 22, with the winner of the NLDS facing the winner of the ALCS.

But how do the MLB playoffs work?

MLB is organised into two leagues, the American and National League.

From there, each league is divided into three divisions – the East, Central and West.

The highest ranking team from each division enters into the playoffs, with ten teams officially qualifying for the post-season.

The team with the most wins in the division immediately progresses on to the playoffs, while the two teams below them square off against each other in an attempt to get into the playoffs.

The two teams below the division winner are dubbed the ‘Wild Card’ teams, and play a winner-take-all game against each other in order to get into the Divisional series.

The division series winners then go on to play in the division championship series.

This year, the National League Divisional Series sees the St Louis Cardinals square off against the Washington Nationals, and in the American League Divisional Series, the New York Yankees are facing the Houston Astros.

The winner of each Divisional Series progresses through to the World Series.

The World Series sees the winners from the ALCS and NLCS face off in a best-of-seven.
