Michelle Obama: Ex-FLOTUS reveals the heartbreaking reason she will be visiting Vietnam

The ex-FLOTUS will be travelling to Vietnam to share stories about female education. Michelle will travel with Jenna Bush Hager, one of two daughters of George W. Bush and Michelle’s predecessor, Laura Bush. Mrs Hager is a correspondent for the Today programme, an NBC news and talk show.

A TV crew will follow the visit to Vietnam.

Michelle said on the Today Show: “A year ago today, the Obama foundation launched the Girls Opportunity Alliance right here on the Today show.

“More than 98 million adolescent girls aren’t in school, yet the evidence is clear: When girls get the opportunities they deserve, our whole world benefits.

“That’s why we’ve been working to lift up grassroots leaders in organisations around the world who improve girls’ lives every day.”

She added: “Today, on the Day of the Girl, I am thrilled to share the news that in December I’ll be traveling to Vietnam with my friend Jenna Bush Hager— and a few other special guests, too.”

Hollywood star Julia Roberts is set to be one of the guests.

Actresses Lana Condor and Veronica Ngo, both born in Vietnam, will also be part of the group.

Ms Condor grew up in the US after being adopted by an American couple but spent her early years in a Vietnamese orphanage.

“It’s an awesome opportunity to help shine a light on all of those that are helping keep girls in school.

“We know that if a girl stays in school, they are more likely to lift up not only themselves, but their communities too.

“So Michelle and I are hitting the road in December and we are gonna share the inspiring stories of the incredible people that are helping to make our world a better place, proving every day that even one person has the power to make a difference.”

The trip will be shown on YouTube and on talk show, Today.

Mrs Hager and sister Barbara Bush are the only Presidential twin children.

The former married Henry Hager in 2008.

Ms Roberts is an Oscar award winner, taking Best Actress for her performance as titular character Erin Brockovich in the 2000 biographical film detailing Mrs Brockovich’s successful law suit against Pacific Gas and Electric Company.

Ms Condor starred in the 2016 film, ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’.

Ms Ngo moved to Norway aged 10 but returned to Vietnam and eventually launched a modelling career before moving into acting.

Vietnam is currently governed by the Communist Party of Vietnam.

Michelle’s husband Barack Obama visited Vietnam in 2009, while Mr Bush visited in 2006 for the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation summit.
