Hurricane tracker: Does the Saffir-Simpson scale need updating after Hurricane Dorian?

The scale was the product of civil engineer Herbert Saffir and meteorologist Robert Simpson, who was once director of the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in the US.

In being classed as a Category 5 major hurricane on the scale, the expectation is that “catastrophic damage will occur”.

And for some experts in this field, a Category 5 rating is still an accurate measure for hurricanes such as Dorian.

Dr Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist at the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University told Express.co.uk: “I generally don’t see the point of including another level on the scale… Catastrophic damage is what occurred on Grand Bahama and Abaco.
