Legendary director Martin Scorsese’s recent revelation that he doesn’t consider superhero movies – especially the films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – to be cinema didn’t go over very well with many in Hollywood who have worked hard to put those stories on the big screen. But, Robert Downey Jr. – arguably the most-beloved actor in the MCU – says that he appreciates the opinion and it’s something he needs to take a look at.
While appearing on The Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM radio, RDJ said that he appreciates Scorsese’s opinion. And, like anything, we need all of the different perspectives so we can “come to center and move on.”
Downey Jr. didn’t take offense to the remarks, but he did say that they made “no sense.”
“I’ll tell you the truth, I didn’t expect [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] to become what it became and it is this very large, multi-headed Hydra at this point,” Downey Jr. explained. “I’ve always had other interests, and according to Scorsese, it’s not cinema so I have to take a look at that, you know?”
Scorsese recently told The Guardian that he tried to watch a Marvel movie, but “that’s not cinema.” He did acknowledge that the movies are well made and the actors are doing the best they can under the circumstances. But, then he compared superhero movies to theme parks.
The Irishman director explained that the movies aren’t “the cinema of human beings trying to convey emotional, psychological experiences to another human being.”
In response, Joss Whedon – director of The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron – said Scorsese’s comments reminded him of James Gunn, who put his heart and guts into Guardians of the Galaxy. Whedon said he reveres Scorsese and he sees his point, but there’s a reason he is “always angry.”
Gunn also joined the conversation, tweeting that was “saddened” by Scorsese’s comments because he is one of his favorite living filmmakers and he is judging his films without seeing them. However, he will always love Scorsese and can’t wait to see The Irishman.
As for Downey, he also answered responded to Stern’s surprise that he has never received an Oscar nomination for the role of Tony Stark. When asked if he would campaign this season for his performance in Avengers: End Game, Robert Downey Jr. said, “There was some talk about it, and I said ‘let’s not.’”

The Irishman will have a limited release in theaters on November 1st, and then it will hit Netflix on November 27th.
