Man Utd signings since Sir Alex Ferguson left rated and slated – 11 hits and 15 misses

Manchester United fans can be forgiven for pining for Sir Alex Ferguson amid their difficulties under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian’s time at Old Trafford appears to be winding down after just seven months as permanent manager, with the club stuck in a rut and well off the pace in the Premier League.

Some Manchester United fans want Solskjaer to be given time, though, and point to the good captures of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Daniel James and Harry Maguire to insist they’re heading in the right direction.

United have gone through David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho in the years since Ferguson left. We now rate every signing made since the Scot retired six years ago.

Marouane Fellaini – Hit

Divided opinion at Manchester United due to the fact he didn’t look the part. Moyes, Van Gaal and Mourinho all rated him, though, and he scored some key goals. Criticism, ultimately, was unjust.

Juan Mata – Hit

It’s true Juan Mata has never looked as good for United as he did for Chelsea. But, like Fellaini, he’s popped up with big goals with a brace against Liverpool a particular highlight.

Ander Herrera – Hit

Ander Herrera was a snarling influence for Manchester United and gave them an edge they now lack. The Red Devils’ midfield isn’t the same without him.

Luke Shaw – Miss

Luke Shaw gets into the Manchester United team by default. He’s not an Andy Robertson and is nowhere near the standards of Red Devils legends Patrice Evra and Denis Irwin.

Marcos Rojo – Miss

A red card waiting to happen. Why the Glazers prevented him leaving this summer is baffling.

Angel Di Maria – Miss

Angel Di Maria had a topsy-turvy campaign at United but his failure to adjust to the Premier League, and his decision to push for a move to PSG by going awol, makes him a flop.

Daley Blind – Hit

Daley Blind JUST makes the hit list. He was brilliant under Van Gaal and his form for Ajax is proof Jose Mourinho should have utilised his qualities better.

Radamel Falcao – Miss

He cost £6million to sign on loan in 2014 but managed just four goals. Dire.

Victor Valdes – Miss

Only played twice for United before Van Gaal demoted him over criticism of the Dutchman’s training methods.

Memphis Depay – Miss

Had the talent to succeed at United, but not the attitude or application. A wonderkid who never lived up to his billing.

Matteo Darmian – Miss

Matteo Darmian enjoyed a positive start at United but his form faded badly. Was a peripheral figure last season under both Mourinho and Solskjaer.

Morgan Schneiderlin – Miss

Couldn’t cope with the jump to United and when Mourinho came in he was offloaded after just three appearances under the Special One.

Bastian Schweinsteiger – Miss

Bastian Schweinsteiger arrived at United with a reputation as one of the world’s best midfielders. He was past his best, though, and never produced that form at Old Trafford.

Sergio Romero – Hit

Has served United well since arriving in 2015 and starred as the club won the Europa League in 2017.

Anthony Martial – Hit

Makes the hit list, but only just. Anthony Martial is talented but must achieve consistency to take his game to the next level.

Eric Bailly – Miss

Had a good first season but now appears an injury waiting to happen. Somebody United should look to offload in January.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Hit

Zlatan Ibrahimovic arrived at 34 but, despite his advancing years, ‘conquered England’. A striker whose ruthless streak has been missed at United ever since.

Henrik Mkhitaryan – Miss

Lasted 18 months at United but good moments were few and far between. Nobody was ever going to block a move away in January 2018.

Paul Pogba – Jury’s Out

It would be unfair to label Paul Pogba a miss – but he’s not been a huge hit either. The jury is still out three years on.

Romelu Lukaku – Miss

Romelu Lukaku comes under miss but it’s not all his fault. United should have played to his strengths more and never did enough to help the Belgian.

Nemanja Matic – Miss

Started brightly but has been off the pace for some time now. Another player who must be shown the door.

Alexis Sanchez – Miss

Four goals, on wages of £400,000-a-week? Absolutely abysmal. The Chilean Bebe.

Diogo Dalot – Jury’s Out

May no longer be United’s right-back for the future but he’s a good squad player and one who can improve at both ends in time.

Fred – Miss

Whoever convinced United to pay £52million for Fred must be having a laugh. He’s terrible and the club must cut their losses.

Lee Grant – Hit

Comes under hit because of his off field influence. A respected member of the squad who should become a United coach at the end of the campaign.

Harry Maguire – Jury’s Out

It’s early days but Harry Maguire has blown hot and cold so far. May experience an upturn in form when United learn how to attack again.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka – Hit

Struggles at times going forward but has already shown glimpses of why he’s worth £52million an should improve with time.

Daniel James – Hit

Rip-roaring pace and a stunning strike on him, Daniel James is a superstar in the making.
