Portuguese Man Of War: How deadly is Portuguese Man Of War? How to identify from jellyfish

According to National Geographic, the Portuguese man-of-war comprises four separate polyps, and its top polyp is a gas-filled bladder which rises above the water.

It is this polyp where the organism gets its name from, as it seems to resemble an old warship at full sail.

According to the NOAA, this balloon-like float may be blue, pink or violet in colour, and rises up to six inches above the water line.

If the man-of-war is threatened by something on the surface, it can deflate its air bags and briefly submerge.
