Virgin Media free broadband boost – improve your speeds with these simple tips

If your internet connection isn’t up to scratch then there could be some very simple ways to improve it.

Virgin Media has just revealed some top tips for boosting your signal and these simple hacks could help to make your connection better around the home.

These top tips include making sure your router is placed in the ultimate position and giving it a complete reboot every now and again.

So, if your home appears to be suffering from a poor signal, here’s some ways to try and make things better.

TOP TIPS FOR BOOSTING YOUR BROADBAND

• Don’t keep your router in a cabinet, keep it out in the open so the signal is free to roam.

• Own a fish tank? Make sure your aquatic pets aren’t in the way of your router as water can seriously disrupt things when trying to get online.

• Move your router at least one metre away from objects such as televisions, wireless speakers and cordless phones. These devices have their own signals and can mess with your WiFi.

• Keep your router upright, with the front lights facing into the room. This makes sure the signal goes outwards and around your home.

• It’s best not have your Hub router on the floor so find a table to place it on and that should help improve things.

• If you haven’t given your router a reboot in a while then this is a good idea. Make sure nobody is the middle of downloading anything then switch your hub off…wait 30 seconds then turn it back on again.

It’s worth noting that these hacks won’t make your broadband faster as most bundles will be capped to a certain speed but they could help alleviate Wi-Fi blackspots.

If you do want much quicker speeds, then good news is also on its way.

Virgin Media already offers downloads of over 500Mbps but that’s now increasing to 1Gbps in some areas of the UK.

At that speed, you’ll be able to download a full HD movie in around 30 seconds – something that usually takes over 10 minutes at average UK speeds.

Virgin Media’s Gig1 upgrade has begun rolling out to around 100,000 homes in Southampton with more areas expected to follow in the coming weeks.

Speaking about the upgrade, Jeff Dodds, Chief Operating Officer at Virgin Media, said: “By launching our hyperfast Gig1 services in Southampton today, we’re marking the start of next-generation gigabit connectivity across our entire network at a speed and scale unmatched by anyone else.

“This service is more than 20 times faster than the UK’s average broadband speed.”

Of course, if you want 1Gbps broadband you are going to have pay for it and it’s not exactly cheap.

Prices start from £62 per month for broadband only and rise to a wallet-wrecking £119 per month for those wanting the Ultimate Oomph package.
