PS Plus October 2019 free PS4 games update: Xbox Gold left in the dust by Sony

It’s been a while since we pitted Xbox Gold against PS Plus in the battle for subscription superiority here on the Express.

But the gulf in class for October 2019 is so vast that we just had to take a look at what you get when you subscribe to PlayStation Plus, compared to the free games Xbox One owners receive when joining Xbox Gold.

It’s definitely one of the strongest months in PlayStation Plus history, after MLB The Show ’19 and The Last of Us Remastered joined the lineup earlier this week.

The latest batch of PS Plus games are available to download until November 5, so there’s plenty of time to download and enjoy the PS4 releases.

Xbox Gold subscribers, on the other hand, can download Tembo the Badass Elephant until the end of the month, and Friday the 13th: The Game from October 16 until November 15.

Proving that more doesn’t always mean better, We Were Here remains part of the service until midnight on October 15, and Xbox 360 games like Bolt and Ninja Gaiden 3 can be downloaded at various points throughout the month.

Check out the official descriptions below for a closer look at the free PS4 and Xbox One games in October 2019.

With a Metacritic score of 86%, MLB The Show ’19 features baseball legends both past and present. It’s even got an RPG-style mode, not to mention all the usual single-player and online modes.

“Take part in the ultimate baseball duel: the battle between hitter and pitcher,” reads the official description.

“Get in a quick game, explore a full RPG-style experience or take on the world in online competition – playing as MLB legends past and present.

“Discover the best of baseball. Welcome to The Show.”

Despite being one of the best sporting simulations in memory, it pales in comparison to Sony’s other PS Plus game for October.

With a Metacritic score of 95%, The Last of US Remastered is easily one of the highest rated games to ever appear on PS Plus.

“In a hostile, post-pandemic world, Joel and Ellie, brought together by desperate circumstances, must rely on each other to survive a brutal journey across what remains of the USA,” reads the official description.

The remastered version of what was originally a PS3 game features beautiful 1080p HD visuals, as well as new multiplayer maps and a single-player prequel starring Ellie.

It also comes with a behind-the-scenes in-game commentary from the cast and creative director.

It’s also the perfect way to prepare for the upcoming sequel, which has a February 21 release date in 2020.

Unfortunately for Xbox Gold subscribers, the Xbox One offerings aren’t quite in the same league.

2D side-scrolling adventure game Tembo the Badass Elephant is the pick of the bunch, earning a 70% score on Metacritic.

Friday the 13th The Game doesn’t fare quite so well, earning just 53% on the review aggregator website.

Needless to say, in the battle between PS Plus and Xbox Games with Gold for October 2019, Microsoft has been well and truly left in the dust.

Let’s hope November is a stronger month for the Microsoft subscription service.
