Tom Holland Reportedly Played a Major Role in Saving the Spider-Man MCU Deal – IGN News

If you, like countless others, are breathing a huge sigh of relief that Sony and Marvel have decided to make nice and partner on a third Spider-Man MCU film, you’ve got Tom Holland to thank. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor played an instrumental role in convincing the powers that be at Sony and Disney to patch things up.

According to sources speaking with THR, Holland began using his clout as the actor behind Spider-Man (along with his role in Sony’s upcoming Uncharted film) shortly after 2019’s D23 event in August. Holland spoke with Sony film chairman Tom Rothman and implored him to reconnect with Disney. Not only that, Holland also reached out to Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney and one of the entertainment world’s most powerful executives.

While details are sparse on what those conversations looked like, eventually, the tension between the two studios began to dissipate after Holland showed the executives the massive fan support for Spider-Man’s return.

Disney/Marvel and Sony ended up striking a deal that favored Sony more than Disney’s original demand. Rather than a 50/50 split, Disney and Marvel will receive about 25% of the third Spider-Man film’s profits, while retaining merchandising rights, along with putting up a quarter of the film’s financing.

Holland seemed as happy about the deal as MCU fans were, posting a meme from The Wolf of Wall Street wherein Leonardo DiCaprio shouts “I’m not [expletive] leaving! The show goes on!”

That leaves us MCU fans with at least one more full Spider-Man film, and at least one Spidey appearance in a tertiary MCU film. That third Spider-Man film will release on July 16, 2021. Check out which phase 4 movie we think Holland/Spider-Man will most likely show up in.
