Paul Pogba left of Man Utd's Europa League squad for AZ Alkmaar after specialist advice

Paul Pogba has been left out of the Manchester United squad to face AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday.

United travel to Holland for their second group game of the Europa League.

And Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will line his team out without Pogba – or club captain Ashley Young, who has also been left at home.

“Following a specialist’s opinion, Paul Pogba requires a period of further rest & conservative treatment for the foot injury he sustained in the game against Southampton in August,” a United statement read.

United have opted for a 21 man squad, which includes 10 academy graduates, for the trip to Alkmaar as they look to build on the 1-0 win over Astana.

Mason Greenwood, who scored that goal, is in the squad and could play ahead of Marcus Rashford who struggled against Arsenal on Monday.

Diogo Dalot and Angel Gomes are back after injury but Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Phil Jones and Eric Bailly remain out of the reckoning.

United are struggling domestically this term and pressure is building on Solskjaer. One Monday they were denied three points by a Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalsier in a game void of any real quality.

Before that United were held by Rochdale in the League Cup and needed penalties to go through and were beaten by West Ham at the London Stadium.

The Astana result was their last win in a period that has seen them win just two out of seven Premier League games.

And former United hero Peter Schmeichel hammered Pogba earlier in the week by branding him a ‘problem child’.

“It was a really weird performance. Sitting in the stands looking at the team and the shape it was difficult to understand what was going on, what the plan for the game was,” Schmeichel told Stadium Astro.

“It was very clear what Arsenal was doing. In every game before today they played the ball out from the back, [today] they didn’t.

“Every goal kick was kicked up, putting pressure up to the Manchester United half. But when Manchester United had the ball it was difficult to see what the plan was.

“And one thing that Ole Gunnar mentioned, when United had the ball he said it was very slow, I can only agree with that.

“The way the ball is being moved around when Pogba is in the team is different to the pace the ball is being moved around when he’s not in the team.

“That is something I think they need to work on. If Pogba is playing in this team he needs to speed it up a bit.

“He was seriously slowing it down, in the first 25 minutes just basically playing the ball backwards. For a player of his calibre that was disappointing.

“I don’t understand what his role in this team is. Even when Ole made the substitutions and put Pogba further forward, not a lot happened.

“There were two very good passes in the game from Pogba but it’s two, it’s not 15.

“And I see that as a problem. He takes up so much attention. It kind of feels like he’s a problem child in this team.”

The Manchester United travelling squad in full: De Gea, Romero, Grant, Dalot, Lindelof, Maguire, Tuanzebe, Rojo, Williams, McTominay, Matic, Fred, Garner, Pereira, Mata, Lingard, Gomes, James, Chong, Rashford, Greenwood
