Bernie Sanders in hospital for emergency surgery – All campaign events cancelled

The Vermont senator was rushed to hospital last night where he was found to have a blocked artery. Doctors took immediate action and inserted two stents. Jeff Weaver, Mr Sanders’ adviser said in a statement: “During a campaign event yesterday evening, Sen. Sanders experienced some chest discomfort. Following medical evaluation and testing he was found to have a blockage in one artery and two stents were successfully inserted.

“Sen. Sanders is conversing and in good spirits. He will be resting up over the next few days.

“We are canceling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.”

The 78-year-old is hoping to boot President Donald Trump out of the White House next year.

He lost out on the Democratic Party’s nomination to Hilary Clinton during the 2016 election campaign.

Mr Sanders, the oldest candidate among the 19 contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination, was in Las Vegas, Nevada, when he fell ill.

He had been scheduled to hold a campaign event at a town hall in Las Vegas on Wednesday as well as attending a gun safety forum.

He has emerged as one of the top contenders to challenge Mr Trump out of the crowded field, which includes former vice president Joe Biden.

Mr Sanders reported a big $25.3m (£20.55m) fundraising haul for the third quarter, putting him in the early lead in the money race.

A campaign aide told the New York Times: “He feels better than ever because that’s how people feel after they get a stent and there’s more blood flow.”

The Democrat had been keeping up with a hectic schedule on the campaign trail, often holding several events in different cities in one day.

Mr Biden, one of his main rivals in the race, said he and his wife hope to see him back in action soon.

He wrote on Twitter: “@DrBiden and I are sending our best wishes to @BernieSanders, Jane, and the whole Sanders family.

“Anyone who knows Bernie understands what a force he is. We are confident that he will have a full and speedy recovery and look forward to seeing him on the trail soon.”

If elected, Mr Sanders would be the oldest US President in history.

Republican President Trump, who was 70 when his term in the Oval Office began, holds the record.
