Zinedine Zidane will not be sacked despite Real Madrid being ‘battered’ by Club Brugge

Real Madrid will not sack Zinedine Zidane yet, according to European football expert Raphael Honigstein.

Honigstein was speaking at half time of tonight’s Champions League clash between Real and Club Brugge at the Bernabeu, where Brugge led 2-0.

Los Blancos were on course for their second defeat out of two in the group stage but Honigstein said Zidane’s job was safe for now.

“I don’t think anything will happen after this game [if Madrid lose] because Real Madrid can still qualify from this group,” Honigstein said on BT Sport.

“But of course it doesn’t help when you start with two defeats in the competition that is always the most important competition for Real Madrid.

“Yes of course they want to wrestle control back in La Liga, Barcelona have been dominant in recent years.

“But the Champions League is a special competition with a special romance where they are the record holders.

“It doesn’t change for much for those who still have some doubts over his management.”

Emmanuel Dennis scored both of Brugge’s opening goals against Real and former West Ham midfielder Don Hutchison expressed his shock at the scoreline at half time.

“I said it couldn’t happen – they’ve been battered, Real Madrid, for 45 minutes,” Hutchison said.

“Brugge have been excellent. Every time the two full-backs have been high up the pitch, they’re running power with the front three has been excellent.

“[The first goal was] very fortunate. That’s Real playing a high line and a case in point with the two full-backs, very fortunate with the finish, a double touch he doesn’t mean.

“It went to VAR, very, very tight the calls were, you can just see [Sergio] Ramos trying to put the breaks on, he knows he’s in desperate trouble.

“Varane can’t quite get back in, the second one equally as tight but Dennis is onside and as I said he doesn’t mean the finish.

“The second finish, equally as fortunate and then improvised really well with the dink finish.”
