Pixel 4 leak reveals new Google phone could miss out on a feature many were expecting

Another day, another Pixel 4 leak.

The latest in a series of Pixel 4 outings has come in the form of a five-minute video by YouTube channel Nextrift that appears to have revealed Google’s latest smartphone in full.

The footage seems to corroborate prior leaks about the new Android flagship – it’s once again shown with a square camera module on its rear and a thick bezel above its display.

In addition to exhibiting the Pixel 4’s purported design, Nextrift also shows off a number of new features the handset will supposedly tote. Chief of these is noted to be a facial unlocking system that was confirmed by Google back in July.

Nextrift demonstrates the set-up process of the new feature and praises its speed.

Although not confirmed by Google, many Android fans had initially speculated the Pixel 4 could come with an in-display fingerprint scanner to complement its new facial unlocking technologies.

All previous Pixel devices have boasted physical fingerprint scanners on their rear panels – Google already confirmed this would not be the case on the Pixel 4 when the firm posted a picture of the phone’s back casing earlier this year.

This certainly meant it was possible the new Google handset could come with an in-display fingerprint sensor like numerous other flagship devices on the market right now such as the OnePlus 7 Pro, Huawei P30 Pro and Samsung Galaxy S10.

However in the new hands-on video, Nextrift claims the alleged Pixel 4 did not have a fingerprint reader of any kind, suggesting its facial scanning will be the only method of unlocking, save for a traditional PIN or pattern.

Unlocking aside, the YouTube clip also says the purported Pixel 4 has a 90Hz display. Google will supposedly include a feature in the phone’s settings called “Smooth Display” that boosts the phone’s refresh rate.

Only a limited number of smartphones currently boast a display with a refresh rate higher than 60Hz, these include the ASUS ROG Phone 2, OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T and the Razer Phone 2.

A higher refresh rate is appealing primarily because it makes navigating a phone’s operating system feel smoother and speedier overall.

Finally, Nextrift also discusses the alleged Pixel 4’s camera system in the video. The phone is noted to boast two sensors within its new square camera module.

While the exact function of each lens is not detailed, the phone is noted to produce more true to life shots than the Samsung Galaxy S10+, primary because its photos are less saturated overall.

It’s worth noting Nextrift is also eager to state the claimed Pixel 4 unit in the video is not running final camera software, therefore it’s possible the phone’s photographic capabilities could improve when it releases.

Google has pencilled in a hardware event taking place on October 15, it’s expected the firm will take the wraps off the Pixel 4 here.

Of course, Express.co.uk will bring you all the announcements on the day.
