Meghan Markle big change: How royal life has ‘engaged’ Duchess and made her more confident

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry embarked upon a ten-day tour of Africa last week, with Meghan staying with baby Archie in South Africa while Harry took separate trips to Angola, Botswana and Malawi. During her time in South Africa, Meghan has made a number of visits to address issues close to her heart. In particular, Meghan has been praised for her recent heartfelt speech in Cape Town, where she praised the women who trailblazed the path to gender and racial equality in the area.

At her breakfast engagement with a number of activists, Meghan said in a touching speech: “I was recently reminded that the first one up the mountain often gets knocked down the hardest, but makes way for everyone behind them.

“These brave women have been able to see how their struggle can pave the way for so many.

“For all young women organisers, activists and campaigners today, you must keep at it and know that you are working for this generation and the next, and also continuing the legacy of the generations of great women before you.”

The Duchess of Sussex has highlighted a number of causes, such as women’s health, education and entrepreneurship, during her time in South Africa.

A body language expert spoke to the Daily Mirror about how Meghan’s behaviour seems to have evolved on the current royal tour.

Body language expert Judi James said the Duchess of Sussex seemed “fully immersed and engaged” in her role as a member of the Royal Family during her tour of South Africa.

Judi added: “Her confidence levels are now at their highest.

“She stands straight and upright, with her turned-up collar suggesting status.”

“This is a much different Meghan to the red carpet version but there are still some constants in her body language repertoire: As she leaves we can see a retention of that signature sweet ‘baby wave’ gesture.”

According to the body language expert, the ‘baby wave’ is an interesting behaviour Meghan has carried out long before she joined the Royal Family.

In analysis of earlier photos of Meghan while she was a Hollywood actress, Judi commented: “As she leaves the red carpet though we can see the ‘performance’ drop and a glimpse of a Meghan that is far more familiar to royal watchers…doing her signature exit: a cute, low-status ‘baby wave’ that suggests she wants to be liked”.

In the evening of Tuesday, October 1, Meghan and Harry are expected to reunite in Johannesburg.

Harry and Meghan are then expected to fly back to London, with baby Archie in tow, on Wednesday, October 2.
