Kevin Clifton: ‘I hate this job’ Strictly star shares thoughts after awkward stage moment

Strictly Come Dancing professional Kevin Clifton, 36, played the main lead as Stacee Jaxx in hit musical Rock of Ages earlier this year.

Earlier this month, he discussed a recurring awkward moment in which the audience didn’t react how he had hoped in a particular scene.

Speaking alongside his co-star Lucas Rush on his podcast The Kevin Clifton show, he explained: “There’s a bit in the show when you’re announcing me just before my Dead or Alive scene where I’m singing Bon Jovi’s Dead or Alive for those who haven’t seen the show.

“Lucas is the narrator of the show, so you talk to the audience and make them laugh and then you go: ‘STACEE JAXX!’ which is me.”

Emphasising on his dramatic entrance, he added: “And then the light goes up on me and I go ‘BANG!’ and I hit this pose.

“Sometimes, the audience go [makes screaming sound] like maybe if there’s a big Strictly following in there and sometimes it’s definitely silent.

“And I don’t know if that’s because they don’t know who I am or they’re not impressed by me, or whether they’re not in that mood to scream and shout or…

“What ever the thing is, and when I’m talking about it, like this to you now, I get it, they could be embarrassed and may not be the first one to shout.

“It could be a number of reasons, but my head, if it goes silent, goes, ‘I hate this job, I hate myself, I’m a terrible performer, they don’t want to see me doing this job, they want to see someone better than me doing this job.

“I now have a job on my hands to show them I am worthy enough to be here’.”

During the same chat, Kevin Clifton revealed the bizarre ritual he does before performing on Strictly Come Dancing and any other show.

The dancer told listeners he prepares for his performances by doing a routine while alone in his dressing room.

He explained: “I have a whole pre-show routine that I have to go through… I don’t do it when anyone is looking.

“First of all, I sort of stand up, I have to have my full costume on and I’m looking at myself in the mirror and have to be jumping up and down and energised.

“I have to jump up and then touch my knees three times.”

“This is getting a bit weirder…” Lucas jokingly added, before Kevin continued: “Then I do, you know the serenity prayer?

“I say that and then not like a prayer, but whoever is on my mind at that time, like a great performer… say it’s The Rock, I’ll go, ‘Right, listen to The Rock, I want you to give me all your energy and charisma and let me entertain them.’”

But just when Lucas thought Kevin’s admission was over, the latter continued: “I then bang the floor with both hands and stretch my arms out wide to make myself as big as possible.

“I then have to pull my arms out and go, ‘Ah,’ I then clap my hands and look in the mirror and say, ‘May the force be with you,’ and then I walk to the stage.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues this Saturday 7.10pm.
