Cruise: The staggering amount of food cruise ship passengers eat in just one week

Cruise ship holidays are the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, with days spent exploring far-flung locations and nights spent winding down on board. With all of that, passengers are bound to get hungry, and that’s why the menu of a cruise ship is so important. In fact, it has been revealed that 40% of British cruisers say food is a big part of their experience. Furthermore, 77% of holidaymakers say they eat more on holiday.

It’s no surprise then that an average cruise ship plows through a gargantuan amount of food during its travels.

Along with that comes the beverages too-whether it’s a coffee in the morning or a glass of red wine in the evening, holidaymakers have an array of choices from sunrise to sundown.

Following extensive research, the total amount of food and beverage consumed in just 7 days has now been revealed.

Travel Insurance provider Admiral uncovered that a typical week-long Caribbean cruise carries over 100 tonnes of food and drink on board every trip.

That is then turned into 250,000 meals, ranging between 28,000 and 30,000 dishes per day.

The whopping figures don’t end there, though.

When it comes to alcohol, these well stocked ships carry approximately 16,862 litres of alcohol-the equivalent of 169 bathtubs.

Meanwhile there is 861kg of coffee, brewed into 119,721 hot cups each morning to wake up sleepy travellers.

In terms of individual food items, the ship’s stock includes 67,550 pastries, 21,000 ice cream cones, 10,680 hot dogs, and 7,200 burgers.

It additionally takes a team of 250 onboard chefs to whip up the memorable meals.

Cosmin Sarbu, Head of Travel Insurance at Admiral, spoke about the impressive statistics, and why food is so important for cruise passengers.

He said: “Cruises are an increasingly popular holiday choice, combining the comfort of a luxury hotel with the benefits of multiple city breaks topped off with world class cuisine that’s quite rightly irresistible.

“Indulging in rich foods and snacks is part of the holiday experience and the benefit of cruising is the wealth of activities to help balance that both on and offboard.

“Holidays are an opportunity for hard-working Brits to take time to relax, unwind and enjoy themselves, something that will come even easier with the peace of mind travel insurance offers.”

The news comes just after Channel 5 documentary ’Secrets of the World’s Most Expensive Cruise Ship’ revealed that the Regent Seven Seas Explorer Cruise ship makes its way through 150,000 bottles of wine every year.
