Jermain Defoe insists he is “fine and all good” after being involved in a car crash just an hour after Rangers’ win over Aberdeen on Saturday afternoon.
The former England international was on the scoresheet, rounding off the scoring with the fifth goal at Ibrox in a 5-0 rout after coming off the substitutes’ bench.
Steven Gerrard’s men cut the gap to Old Firm rivals Celtic to just a single point at the top of the Scottish Premiership.
But Defoe was involved in a collision near Glasgow’s Clyde Tunnel, at around 6pm, not far from the club’s stadium.
Police were called to attend the three-car crash, which left Defoe’s Range Rover with major damage.
Fortunately, nobody suffered any serious injuries.
Two-and-a-half hours later, Rangers tweeted: “#RangersFC can confirm there was a collision earlier this evening involving striker @IAmJermainDefoe and we are happy and relieved to say that no one was seriously injured.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Police were called to reports of a three-car road traffic collision along Balshagray Avenue at 6.05pm.
“Officers remain on the scene. There are no injuries.”
The 36-year-old Rangers striker then addresed the incident himself.
In a short video posted on his official Instagram account, Defoe reassured fans: “I just want to say thank you for all your lovely messages. I know you must have been so worried.
“But no seriously I am fine and all good. I’m just going to go home and rest up.
“I’m a little shocked but I’m all good. Thank you for your messages again.”
James Tavernier scored two penalties for Rangers as they thrashed the Dons in front of their own fans.
Greg Stewart and Alfredo Morelos also scored before Defoe’s late lob.
The Gers have won six of their seven Premiership matches this term, having only lost to Celtic before the international break earlier this month.
Defoe, on loan from Premier League club Bournemouth, has scored 16 goals in 32 appearances across all competitions for the Glasgow giants including eight in 12 this term.
The veteran is expected to be involved in Rangers’ clash with Young Boys in Switzerland in the Europa League on Thursday (5.55pm) as normal.
After that, Steven Gerrard’s men return to domestic duties with the visit of Hamilton next Sunday (3pm).
