Dame Helen Mirren husband: Who is Taylor Hackford? Do they have children together?

Dame Helen Mirren is one of the most recognisable British names in the arts, appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to drama in 2003. She has appeared in some 80 films, more than 50 stage productions and 25 TV shows. She has won an Oscar, multiple BAFTAS and Emmys, and the Olivier award, amid numerous more nominations.

So who is her husband?

Dame Helen, 74, has been married to Taylor Hackford, also 74, since 1997.

Taylor is an American film director with project including classics such as An Officer and a Gentleman and the Oscar favourite, Ray.

He met Helen when he was directing her in White Nights in 1985.

Do they have children?

Taylor has two sons from two previous marriages, and while Helen has spoken of her close relationship with her stepsons, the couple don’t have children together.

What is their relationship history?

Taylor is Helen’s first marriage, but Taylor was married twice before.

But it seems he finally met his match when he began dating Helen in 1986.

The eventually married 11 years later, even though Helen had previously said she never wanted to get married.

She spoke about her change of heart in an interview with AARP Magazine in 2016.

She said: “I did very consciously choose my work over my relationships right up to the time that I met Taylor. I was 38 when I met [him], pretty late in life.

“We got married in the end because we realised that we were going to be together forever.

“We got married, ultimately, for legal reasons more than anything else…I always said I have nothing against marriage, it just wasn’t to my taste, like turnips.”

Speaking to the Today show about her relationship with Taylor in the same year, the actress joked: “I don’t have much life left, do I? So, I hope he’s the love of my life.”

And talking about the success of their marriage, she explained how finding each other later on in their lives enabled them to build a strong relationship.

She said: “The great thing about finding a partnership later on [in life] is that you recognise it as such.

“You recognise the partnership level of this relationship as much as the love and the lust and all the rest of it.”

The Graham Norton Show will air on BBC1 at 10.35pm on Friday night and will be available on the iPlayer shortly after.
