Alexander Armstrong: 'As far as it can go' Pointless host addresses show future

Alexander Armstrong, 49, joined Matt Tebbutt, 45, on Saturday Kitchen where the quiz host admitted he was surprised Pointless was still going strong. The BBC favourite revealed he is stunned the programme is still on-screen but often questions how long it will keep going. As Matt quizzed the frontman on his role on the show, Alexander stated: “Do I have a function? Am I ultimately a Pointless man?” “At the moment I’ve got a job but every time we finish a series of Pointless, I think ‘Oh surely there not going to ask for another one?’”

He added: “Surely we’ve ridden this one as far as it can go.”

Matt queried: “But the show is huge though?”

Alexander replied: “Well, there’s a bit of mint left in the gum I guess.

“People seem to like it, so we love to still make it.”

The small-screen star presents Pointless alongside his co-host Richard Osman, 48.

The first episode of the quiz programme aired in 2009 and has been a fan favourite amongst viewers over the past decade.

Talking about his love for Pointless, Alexander joked that he and his co-presenter were “pretty inept” when they first started doing the show.

He said: “We were pretty inept when we started out.

“The BBC were so supportive and allowed us to make a virtue of how rubbish we were.”

He discussed the key to the show’s success was that him and co-host Richard have been friends for years, and “make each other laugh.”

Alexander expressed he did not want the show to end anytime soon, saying: “It’s been lovely, we love doing it and for now everyone still likes watching it.”

Elsewhere, his colleague Richard took to Twitter who quizzed his 818,400 followers on who they’d like to see govern in Parliament.

In a poll, the Pointless favourite wrote: “Ok, we live in difficult times, so let’s try and gain some clarity. If there was a General Election tomorrow, who would you vote for?

“Who could bring us all together? Please RT, it’s important.”

The so-called political parties to choose from were bizarrely made up of four confectionary assortments which included Maltesers, Jaffa Cakes, Vienetta and Monster Munch.

Richard’s poll received 137,997 votes with Maltesers gaining a lead of 41 percent, Jaffa Cakes had 28 percent, Vienetta with 12 percent and Monster Munch with 19 percent.

He later added: “Just the 100,000 votes on this, and we seem to be heading for either a Maltesers government, or a JaffaCake/Monster Munch coalition.”

Pointless airs tonight on BBC One at 5.50pm.

Saturday Kitchen airs Saturdays at 10am on the same channel.
