Adam Lambert health: 'I'm coming out of a dark period' Queen frontman's struggle

Adam Lambert, 37, is an American singer who shot to fame with American Idol. The singer, songwriter and actor has sold over three million singles worldwide, however, despite his growing success Adam has suffered with a serious mood disorder that saw him a in “dark period.” In a letter written to fans back in February, Adam wrote about his mental health struggle: “I love making and performing music, but there have been many times where I’ve had to compromise on my artistic vision, with executives making decisions based on money and not art.

“Don’t get me wrong, I’m very proud of my body of work.

But I’m coming out of a dark period of second-guessing my own artistry and having my mental health suffer because of it.

I put all my focus on work and started to feel detached in my personal life. My self worth was suffering, I was lonely, and becoming depressed.

The life of a bachelor can be a laugh, with plenty of flings, but after a while it starts to feel empty.

Between frustrations with my career and many lost connections, I felt numb—and though I wanted to fall in love, I knew I wasn’t ready.

“That’s what inspired me to cry out, ‘I don’t need to feel love, I just want to feel something.’

It was in this realisation that I took my first step toward self-care and nursing my spirit back to health.”

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Adam said that he now feels “clarity” after everything he’s been through.

“I know that I have gone through different chapters in that ten years and have bene in different head spaces in different parts of my own personal life.

I feel like now I am more sure of what and who I am and what and who I am not.

I know what I am doing, this is me,” Adam told the publication. Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how a person feels, the way they think and how they act.

American Psychiatric Association said on their website depression symptoms can very from mild to severe and can include:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions

Adam thanked fans for their ongoing support and said in a letter:

“You’ve pushed me to keep going even when I felt discouraged.”

If you suspect you might be suffering from depression it’s important to speak with family, friends and your GP.
