Hurricane Lorenzo is one of four systems churning across the globe and is the most powerful hurricane ever to be recorded in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean. There is the possibility for yet more activity as this year’s highly active hurricane season continues, with one disturbance 80 percent likely to develop into a tropical storm over the next five days. Here are the latest updates on storm systems across the world.
Disturbance One
A small but well-defined low-pressure system is located several hundred miles south of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula.
The low is currently producing no thunderstorms and environmental conditions have become less conducive for tropical cyclone formation.
Some slight development is still possible later today if thunderstorm activity increases while the system moves quickly southeastward, however the low is expected to dissipate over the weekend.
Formation chance over the next five days stands at 30 percent.

Disturbance Two
A broad area of showers and thunderstorms is located near the Pacific coasts of southern Mexico and Central America.
This disturbance is expected to move westward and will interact with an elongated trough of low pressure just south of the coast of Mexico during the next day or two.
A tropical depression or tropical storm is subsequently likely to form over the weekend or early next week near the southern or southwestern coast of Mexico.
Regardless of development, the system is forecast to move west-northwestward to northwestward along the coast of Mexico and will likely produce heavy rainfall with the possibility of flash flooding and mudslides.
Heavy rainfall is also possible along the Pacific coast of Central America through today.
Formation chance through 48 hours is 50 percent, and formation chance over the next five days is high at 80 percent.

Tropical Storm Karen
Tropical Storm Karen is located in the Atlantic ocean, approximately 350 miles southeast of Bermuda.
With winds speeds of 40mph, Karen is maintaining tropical storm status but is expected to weaken to a remnant low by Saturday.
According to the NHC: “Karen’s status as a tropical cyclone is becoming increasingly dubious.
“In a trio of ASCAT passes that arrived yesterday evening, the circulation of the cyclone was indistinguishable from a surface boundary that extends south from the remnants of post-tropical cyclone Jerry.
“This suggests that Karen’s circulation may no longer be well-defined.”

Hurricane Lorenzo
Hurricane Lorenzo is now the most powerful hurricane recorded in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean – packing wind speeds of 145mph.
This makes the large hurricane a category four on the Saffir-Simpson winds scale, and hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the centre and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 265 miles.
As of NHC’s latest update at 5am AST (10am BST) Lorenzo was located approximately 1620 miles south-west of the Azores.
According to the NHCL “Swells generated by Lorenzo are affecting portions of the northeastern coast of South America and will affect portions of The Windward Islands beginning today.
“These swells are likely to cause life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”
