Flights: Baby on board tool causes controversy amongst airline passengers

Japan Airlines (JAL) has recently unveiled a brand new technology which will alert passengers as to where babies and toddlers will be seated within a cabin. Passengers booking with the airline will be able to see where children are sat in relation to their own seats, and have the option to move seats to avoid them if wanted. Children aged between “8 days and two years old” will be flagged by a ‘child icon’. However, JAL have also pointed out that the new feature is not a guarantee.

The JAL website points out: “Child icons are not displayed in the following situations:

“Seats booked as part of a tour or using award tickets

“Seats selected through means other than the JAL website.”

Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that a second Japanese Airline, All Nippon Airways, has “shown where children are sitting for a while”.

While some fliers have applauded the new feature, seeing it as a saving grace for long-haul flights, others have been quick to condemn the airline.

Taking to Twitter, several users voices their joys and concerns.

One user thanked the airline, saying: “This really ought to be mandatory across the board.”

However another user was left disgruntled by the move, saying: “We’re all young once!

“All these people who can’t stand sitting next to young kids need to get over themselves-try and be considerate and realise that there are worse things in the world than sitting next to a crying child.”

Another upset parent wrote: “I am very sympathetic to parents travelling with kids. If you’re not happy with a screaming child in the cabin then I am more than happy to you to try and reason with them.”

Luckily, for parents worried about travelling with their little one, one motherhood blogger recently revealed her top tips for stress free travel.

Jessica Constanti shared her secret, claiming the best way to ensure your baby stays happy in the sky is to buy an extra seat.

She said: “Children don’t need their own seats until they are two, which is great for saving money!

“However, I have found that when I purchase an extra seat for my daughter whilst travelling, it was the best idea we could have had – not only can you pop them down in it once they are sleeping, you will also have the row to yourself and won’t have the added stress of a solo passenger perched awkwardly on the aisle seat.”

The additional space will not only benefit baby with space for toys and books and, it will also offer extra leg room for parents.
