England centre Piers Francis cited for dangerous challenge in World Cup win against USA

Francis will attend a disciplinary hearing in Tokyo some time next week and faces being ruled out of the remainder of the group stage if he is found guilty.

The Northampton midfielder escaped unpunished at the time but with the clampdown on high tackles demanded by World Rugby is open to a ban which could rule him out of the rest of the group stages.

Australia’s Reece Hodge and Samoa’s Rey Lee-Lo picked up three-match bans for high tackles earlier in the tournament.

“We leave it to the judiciary and we’ll take whatever is handed out,” said England coach Eddie Jones.

USA flanker John Quill who was sent off for a shoulder charge on Owen Farrell faces his hearing on Friday.

Jones was pleased with his side’s overall display in their 45-7 win against USA but thinks there is more to come against Argentina a week on Saturday.

“We’re pleased with where we are,” said Jones. “After two games we’re ten points and have conceded one try, we’ve had two fantastic experiences and we’re pretty humbled to be part of it.

“Can we play better? Yes. We know we can and we’ll need to play better in our next game.”

Gold said his side were taught a lesson by England but contributed to their own downfall.

“We’re pretty sombre and disappointed. We feel we let ourselves badly today.” said Gold. “I’m proud of the guys that they didn’t roll over but we were taught a lesson.

“We lost every single aspect of the game. That’s what happens when you play world-class sides. They punish you very badly when you do things wrong.

“We probably missed nearly 40 tackles. We are not better than England but we are a better rugby team than that. It was a bit of a calamity in Kobe tonight.”
